Unique Luxury Wellness Retreats in Australia and New Zealand

Wellness looks different for everyone. For some, it’s movement and feeling strong in body and mind. For others, it’s seclusion, a good night’s sleep and no phone signal. A structured spa retreat, free from decisions, can be its own kind of luxury. And sometimes it’s simpler than that: the sea steadies you, or the mountains give you perspective.

In our experience, wellness is personal, so we begin by listening. Guided by our values of manaakitanga (care and hospitality), kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and whanaungatanga (relationships), we shape wellness journeys around how you want to feel, and the energy you want to bring home with you.

Wellness Holidays in Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand offer wellbeing in many forms. Across both countries you’ll find wilderness camps, rainforest lodges and modern sanctuaries, each with a different way to pause.

These four retreats stand apart, and each is worth considering when you’re craving a reset.

Poronui Safari Camp: an unplugged wilderness reset

Beside the Mohaka River in New Zealand’s North Island, Poronui Safari Camp offers the rare luxury of being unreachable. There’s no mobile reception, no pressure to reply and no notifications to check.

The camp is exclusive to up to four guests, which suits a couple, a family or a small group of friends. Days unfold between the river, rolling hill country and backcountry trails. At night you dine under the stars and fall asleep to the sound of the river.

Poronui’s approach to wellness balances activity with recovery. You might spend the morning on horseback, come back to camp for a long lunch, then take a short drive to The Stables for a sauna or massage. There’s no set schedule, so you decide how much movement, stillness and time together feels right.

Experiences at Poronui Safari Camp:

  • Horse riding through rolling hill country
  • Mountain biking on backcountry trails
  • Heli-fishing on remote river.
  • Stargazing and riverside dining
  • Gym, sauna and massage treatment rooms at The Stables
  • Campfire meals prepared with provisions from the Poronui kitchen
  • Time beside the Mohaka River, out of mobile range

Your stay includes provisions for all meals, house wine and beer, and daily servicing. These details take care of your comfort while the landscape helps you slow down.

The river, hills and backcountry are cared for here, and you feel it. This is a place where it’s easy to put your phone away.

Silky Oaks Lodge: a rainforest retreat shaped by nature and culture

Silky Oaks Lodge sits above the Mossman River beside the Daintree Rainforest in Tropical North Queensland. Here, wellbeing comes through gentle movement, water, rainforest and a deeper understanding of Country.

Silky Oaks suits you if you want a reset with meaning. The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk at Mossman Gorge introduces Kuku Yalanji stories, plant knowledge and the cultural significance of the rainforest. It begins with a traditional smoking ceremony, and you learn directly from local Kuku Yalanji guides.

At Janbal Gallery, acclaimed artist Binna Swindley leads Aboriginal art workshops. If you prefer quiet observation, birdwatching with naturalist Doug Herrington asks for presence and patience in the rainforest.

The rainforest sets the pace. Away from alarms, work hours and family schedules, your day might move from open-air yoga beside the river to a walk under the canopy, then a treatment at Healing Waters Spa. The river and rainforest are close at hand whenever you want to explore on your own.

Experiences at Silky Oaks Lodge:

  • Open-air morning yoga for all fitness and experience levels
  • Guided and self-led rainforest walks
  • Exploring the Mossman River
  • Healing Waters Spa treatments, including couples’ treatments
  • The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk with Kuku Yalanji guides
  • Aboriginal art and painting workshops at Janbal Gallery
  • Birdwatching with an experienced naturalist

Healing Waters Spa draws on the Mossman River, with treatments designed for rest and reconnection. There’s no rush at the end of a treatment. You can take your time coming back to the day.

At Tāpoi, we love the way guests are welcomed and cared for here. It’s what we recognise as manaakitanga.

Sal Salis: a reefside wilderness escape

At Sal Salis, your safari tent sits in the dunes between Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range National Park in Western Australia. The camp is remote, but it isn’t without comfort. There are 15 wilderness tents and one honeymoon tent, each a few steps from the reef, with the main lodge as a place to gather.

This is wellness for people who feel most at ease outdoors. You can swim with turtles, walk the ranges, kayak along the coast or spend an afternoon reading in a hammock. Tides, weather and your own choices shape the day, not a fixed programme.

Sal Salis runs two guided nature experiences each day, one on land and one on the reef. Equipment is provided, and you can explore on your own when conditions allow. In season, optional whale shark and humpback whale swims bring you close to Ningaloo’s largest residents.

Sal Salis is down to earth, with your tent as a private retreat. Comfortable beds, fresh linen, eco ensuites, organic amenities and daily servicing make it feel indulgent without putting a wall between you and nature.

Experiences at Sal Salis:

  • Guided snorkelling on Ningaloo Reef
  • Turtle encounters
  • Guided gorge walks in Cape Range National Park
  • Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding
  • Stargazing under dark skies
  • Independent reef exploration
  • Optional whale shark and humpback whale swims (seasonal)
  • Time on your private deck or in a hammock

Sal Salis asks you to pay attention: to the movement of the reef, the wind across the dunes, the kangaroos passing your tent. Nothing is forced.

The reef, dunes, wildlife and national park make this a rare place to stay, and the guides help you experience it with care and respect.

ROKI Pure: a modern wellness reset in Queenstown

In Queenstown, ROKI Pure takes a more structured approach. The wellness centre sits within ROKI Collection, is reserved for hotel guests, and looks across Lake Wakatipu to The Remarkables.

This is a retreat that starts from where you are. You might be after deep relaxation, better sleep, recovery after an active trip, or simply more room to breathe. ROKI Pure designs its experiences around those different needs rather than putting every guest on the same path.

The offering is organised into Rituals, Resets and Rewilds:

  • Rituals use sensory treatments and therapeutic techniques to release tension and settle the body
  • Resets are self-led experiences in your suite, so you can follow your own rhythm in private
  • Rewilds take wellbeing into Queenstown’s remote landscapes, with helicopter access to secluded spots where the mountains become part of the experience

A Sleep Concierge adds support if rest and circadian rhythm are your focus. For some guests, going home knowing how to rest well is the greatest luxury of all.

Experiences at ROKI Pure:

  • Signature Rituals to release tension and restore balance
  • Self-led Resets in the privacy of your suite
  • Rewild experiences in remote Queenstown landscapes
  • Helicopter access to secluded alpine locations
  • Sleep support through the Sleep Concierge
  • Personalised treatments and recovery experiences
  • Time beside Lake Wakatipu, looking across to The Remarkables

ROKI Pure was named New Zealand’s Best Hotel Spa at the 2026 World Spa Awards.

Its luxury is attentive rather than prescriptive. You aren’t expected to want what the next guest wants. The experience is shaped around how you feel now, and the change you’re looking for.

Choosing the wellbeing you need

The right retreat starts with how you want to feel, not a list of facilities.

Poronui suits you if you want to disappear from the digital world and balance time outdoors with comfort. Silky Oaks is the one if you’re drawn to rainforest, gentle movement, spa treatments and cultural connection. Sal Salis is a natural fit if the ocean, wildlife and easy days outdoors restore you. ROKI Pure is the choice if personalised treatments, sleep support and a considered approach to recovery feel right.

At Tāpoi Travel, we always begin by listening. Your travel style, energy, interests and intentions shape what we recommend. Our values guide the care we put into every detail: the landscapes we choose, the balance of physical, emotional and mental wellbeing, and the wellbeing that comes through relationships, whether with a guide, a practitioner or the people travelling beside you.

We also believe in thoughtful pacing. A wellness journey shouldn’t feel like another busy schedule. The most restorative itineraries leave room for pauses, unplanned moments and days with nothing planned at all.

Wellbeing on your own terms

There’s no single way to feel restored. You might need a break from your phone, time in nature, or a personalised wellness programme. Each of these retreats offers a different answer, and together they show the range of luxury wellness travel across Australia and New Zealand: active, cultural, nature-led, deeply quiet or carefully structured.

Perhaps the most important part of planning is recognising what helps you feel most like yourself. Get in touch, and we’ll help you find the setting, pace and care that suit you.
